Owls of Maine Visit First Grade Classes

Pond Cove first grade had exciting visitors in mid-December. Thanks to a CELT grant, the Chewonki Foundation’s Traveling Naturalist Program was brought back to Cape Elizabeth for their Owls of Maine program.

Each class learned about owl adaptations and what species of owls live in Maine. They talked about what habitats each owl could be found in and got to touch some feathers to compare the softness of owl feathers to other species. A highlight of the program was meeting two of Chewonki’s resident owl ambassadors, an eastern screech owl and a northern saw-whet owl.

This program directly relates to the unit on nocturnal animals the first graders have been working on this year. CELT has been funding this program since 2006, and we are grateful for partnerships that help us enhance environmental education in Cape Elizabeth!
